Montefalco Rosso embodies the great bond between wine and the area of Montefalco. It is produced from Sangiovese and a small percentage of Sagrantino grapes which epitomise the character and identity championed by the Caprai winery.
Sagrantino Collepiano symbolises the “Renaissance” of Montefalco as a wine region. This wine’s roots are entrenched in a secular tradition and is produced with Sagrantino, a unique variety grown only in Montefalco. Collepiano is Sagrantino’s area of production, and refers to the gentle slopes that characterise our hills.
Sagrantino 25 Anni is the result of passionate research and careful clonal selection of the best grapes of Sagrantino. It is a jubilee wine produced for the first time in 1993 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the winery. Since then it has kept this name together with its unique character, power and elegance.
The Sagrantino vine gives grapes with skin rich in polyphenols and with extremely complex aromatic characteristics. For this reason, the Grappa resulting from the distillation of the skins from the Sagrantino grapes is very refined, and characterised by the subtle, yet persistent aroma of the vine it originates from.
The sweetness arrives first to the nose with scents of blackberry and strawberry jam, revealing vanilla and cinnamon. On the palate its warm and sweet, soft and intense. The tannins work to balance the sugars and leave the palate cleansed, ready for another taste.
There are just two wines produced under DOC regulations in the Montefalco area of Umbria – one white and one red. Montefalco Rosso must by law contain a minimum of 70% Sangiovese but will often also include the locally grown Sagrantino grape variety, and the Riserva must be matured for a minimum of 17 months. The Rosso Riserva from Montefalco icon, Arnaldo Caprai, was first produced in 1993 and is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot, aged for 20 months in French oak barrique with an additional 6 months in bottle. It is full-bodied, rich and rounded, with velvety tannins and a long, complex finish. Flavours of wild cherries preserved in spirit, chocolate, violets, vanilla and exotic spices.
